Bishop’s Conference for Clergy, Lay Professionals & Spouses
May 2-4, 2011
The theme and focus for this year’s Conference is “Discovering our Spiritual Gifts and Vocations.” Two exemplary speakers have accepted my invitation to join us as conference leaders. The Rt. Rev. Andrew D. Smith is the retired bishop of Connecticut and the assistant bishop of New York. Bishop Smith will explore what it means to develop and grow spiritual gifts at the institutional level. He will take a real and pragmatic look at challenges in this area – such as when there is a dissonance between one’s own personal gifts and callings and the needs of the greater community.
Bishop Smith is well equipped to tackle this broad and important subject, and he has a very inviting and appealing way of being present for both individuals and groups. Drew is excited to be with us, and I am most grateful for his (totally characteristic) graciousness.
The Rev. Dr. Frank Wade’s sessions will echo the same theme of gift and call, but on an individual level. Dr. Wade is highly respected throughout the Episcopal Church, having served two General Conventions as chaplain to the House of Deputies. He is also an accomplished author (titles include The Art of Being Together: Common Sense About Lifelong Relationships and Transforming Scripture) and serves as an adjunct faculty member at Virginia Theological Seminary. Dr. Wade is a parishioner at Immanuel Church-on-the-Hill, Alexandria. If you are at all familiar with Frank Wade, you will know how fortunate we are to have him as a Conference leader. His work is deeply rooted in – and inspired by – Holy Scripture and he is a most compelling guide.
